There is more treasure in books than in all the pirate’s loot on Treasure Island.” — Walt Disney

Today I saw “The Hunger Games” movie. In my humble opinion, a very good adaptation to the book. Unlike other scripts, this one really enhances the world that Suzanne Collins has created.

First of all, we escape from Katniss’ point of view and we are able to explore some scenarios that are briefly mentioned in the book or not mentioned at all. For example, we can follow Seneca Crane in the making of the Games, his relationship with President Snow, a not-so-drunk Haymitch getting sponsors for the kids, the first upraising in District 12.

Jennifer Lawrance plays the perfect Katniss. She’s just like in the books: strong, rebellious, sceptic, distant, corageous, our heroine. She crumbles with Rue’s death, and shows tenderness taking care of Peeta. Although Josh Hutcherson has said that he was dying to portrait Peeta, I don’t think his role was well translated to the big screen. He is the good boy, and he’s the one that makes them both likeable to the audience. He’s a strategist in a way Katniss can never be. They could have explored more his character. Gale is only there in the reaping, then nothing more than a witness of Katniss and Peeta on-screen love. His big moment will not come until Mockingjay.

Visually, it’s stunning. The Capitol has all the weirdness described in the book, the futurist costumes, the technology. The two dresses of the Girl on Fire were amazing, Lenny Kravitz makes a heart-warming Cinna, Katniss’ greatest supporter.

I was worried on how they were going to manage the blood bath. The movie is brutal and cruel where it needs to be. There is killing, specially in the Cornucopia scene, but then it’s not something totally unwatchable. I think the PG-13 rating is suitable to the movie.

To sum up, I was really satisfied with the final result. I think it will live up to the expectations of the fans and many others will be interested in the saga afterwards.

May the odds be ever in your favor!

This scene should have been included in the movie.
